“Ghostly beauty.” - RICH TERFRY, CBC RADIO ONE
Kyla Ferrier is an indie rock singer-songwriter whose music is at once barebones and poetic, rocking and anthemic. Her dreamy sound has been compared to acts like Daughter, Anohni, Grimes, and ’90s alt rock bands. The first decade of her recording career was spent keeping a low profile as a performer in the live scene, focusing on songwriting, production, and video creation. This allowed for a steady percolation of inspiration to nourish a burgeoning distinct artistic sensibility. Kyla did, however, take to the stage a handful of times during that period, including a performance at Calgary's The King Eddy, where a lively, packed bar of 150+ people fell silent as soon as she started to sing, and remained tuned in for the duration of the performance of her 7-track album, There Is Desire. Then, covid happened. A caesura.
In May 2022, Kyla decided to emerge into the world of live performance by committing to playing as a street busker a total of 50 times over the course of the summer. The goal was met, with performance locales transitioning from streets to stages. Kyla's music has been featured on CBC Radio One by Rich Terfry, who described the song as, “Ghostly beauty. You really enjoy how the song is crafted, just the atmosphere of it, feeling it gives you when you listen to it. There’s a real haunting quality about it.”
